What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works on the principle that the well-being of an individual relies on the optimal function of all the body’s structures, as well as carefully considering the effect of environmental and psycho-social factors to health.

Treatment is a hands on therapy, using palpation, soft tissue massage, stretching and careful joint manipulation. This aims to reduce muscle tension, restore joint mobility, and enhance blood flow and nerve supply to tissues. Diagnosis is reached through thorough health screening and appropriate medical examination.

How can Osteopathy help?

Osteopathy primarily treats conditions such as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica and slipped discs
  • Stress
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
  • Arthritic pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Back pain during and after pregnancy
  • Poor posture

What to expect from treatment

Treatment always starts with a thorough medical case history and medical examination. This is followed by a postural assessment, and any orthopaedic, cardiovascular or neurological testing as appropriate. This allows a thorough diagnosis, and helps to screen each patient for any other underlying health problems.

Each treatment is tailored to the individual and aims to educate the patient to help them understand their condition, and how to manage it effectively. When appropriate, the osteopath will advise the patient on stretches and exercises to do at home, so that they can prevent reoccurrence of their problem, and cope better with day to day life.
